Device Guide

Which Devices Work Abroad?

Most modern electronics are dual-voltage (100–240V). Here's what to check before you travel.

📱
Smartphones
Always Safe

All modern smartphones work on 100–240V. Your charger works everywhere — you only need a plug adapter, not a converter. Check the fine print on your charger: it will say "Input: 100-240V".

💻
Laptops
Always Safe

All laptop chargers (MacBook, Dell, HP, Lenovo) are universal 100–240V. Just bring a plug adapter. Never need a voltage converter for a laptop.

📷
Cameras & Power Banks
Always Safe

All DSLR, mirrorless and GoPro chargers are dual-voltage. Power banks and their USB chargers all work globally on any voltage.

💍
Hair Dryers
Check Label

Most Indian hair dryers are 220–240V only. They will NOT work in Japan (100V) or USA/Canada (120V) without a converter. Some travel hair dryers are dual-voltage — check the label first.

💧
Curling Irons & Straighteners
Check Label

Most are single-voltage (220–240V). Will not work correctly at 110–120V without a converter. Dyson and some premium brands offer dual-voltage models — check the label.

Electric Shavers & Trimmers
Check Before Packing

Older shavers are often single-voltage. Modern Philips and Braun shavers are usually dual-voltage. Check the label or buy a travel shaver. At wrong voltage they may burn out.

💡

Pro tip: Always check your device label for "Input: 100-240V" — if it says this, you only need a plug adapter. If it shows a single voltage like "220-240V", you need a converter for countries with lower voltage like Japan (100V) or USA (120V).

Your Complete Adapter Guide

When You Don't Need an Adapter

Most of Europe (Type C/F), Nepal, Bhutan, Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Philippines, many Middle Eastern countries and most of Asia use Type C which is also common in India. Your phone charger's 2-pin plug will work directly.

🔌
When You Need an Adapter

UK, Singapore, Malaysia, UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait use Type G (3 flat rectangular pins). Australia and New Zealand use Type I. Japan and USA use Type A/B. A universal travel adapter covers all of these.

When You Need a Converter

Japan (100V), USA and Canada (120V) use lower voltages than India (230V). Modern electronics auto-adjust, but older hair dryers and specialty devices may need a voltage converter. Always check the device label first.

Buy One Universal Adapter

A single universal travel adapter (₹400–₹1,200) covers all plug types globally — Type A, B, C, G, I and more. Look for one with built-in USB and USB-C ports. Anker, Belkin and local brands all make good ones. Buy before you leave India — airport prices are 3× higher.

Hotel Rooms

Many international hotels have universal sockets at the desk or near the bed. Luxury hotels especially in UAE, Singapore, UK and Europe often provide adapters at reception on request. But don't rely on this — always carry your own.

Common Questions

Travel Plug FAQ

Do Indian chargers work in Europe?+
Yes, for most of Europe — no adapter needed. Most European countries use Type C (2 round pins) which is also used in India. Your phone charger and laptop charger will plug in directly. The voltage is also 230V, same as India. Switzerland is an exception — it uses Type J which needs a small adapter. UK uses Type G and needs an adapter.
Do I need a travel adapter for Thailand?+
Thailand uses Type A, B and C sockets. Since India also uses Type C (2 round pins), your Indian phone charger and most laptop chargers will work directly in Type C sockets in Thailand without an adapter. However, some older Thai sockets are Type A (flat 2-pin American style) — for those you'll need an adapter. A universal adapter covers all Thai socket types. Voltage is 220V — compatible with Indian devices.
Can I use Indian plugs in UAE?+
No — UAE uses Type G sockets (3 flat rectangular pins, same as UK). Indian plugs will not fit without an adapter. The voltage is 230V which is the same as India, so you do not need a voltage converter — just a plug adapter. Buy a Type G adapter or universal adapter before you leave India. Most hotels in Dubai have universal sockets at the desk.
Can I charge my phone in Japan without a converter?+
Yes. Modern phone chargers (including Indian ones) are all dual-voltage — they handle 100V to 240V automatically. Japan uses 100V but your phone charger will work fine. You do need a plug adapter though — Japan uses Type A (2 flat vertical pins) which is different from Indian plugs. A ₹400 adapter is all you need for your phone and laptop in Japan.
Do I need a voltage converter for USA or Canada?+
For phones, laptops and cameras — no converter needed. These are all dual-voltage. For hair dryers, curling irons and older appliances — check the label. If it says "220-240V only" then yes, you need a converter. USA and Canada use 120V. Most modern travel gear handles 100-240V automatically, but always check the device label. You definitely need a plug adapter for USA — they use Type A/B flat pins.
What is the best universal travel adapter for Indian travellers?+
For most Indian travellers, a universal travel adapter with USB and USB-C ports is the best buy. Good options available in India: Belkin Universal Adapter (₹1,200), Anker PowerPort series, or generic universal adapters from Amazon India (₹400–600). Look for one that explicitly supports Type G (UK/UAE/Singapore), Type A (USA/Japan) and Type I (Australia). One adapter handles 95% of all global travel.
Will my Indian laptop work in Singapore and Malaysia?+
Yes, your laptop will work perfectly — laptop chargers are universally dual-voltage (100–240V). However, Singapore and Malaysia use Type G sockets (same as UK — 3 flat rectangular pins). You will need a plug adapter to connect your Indian charger. Voltage is 230V and 240V respectively — fully compatible. Just pack a Type G adapter or a universal adapter.
